Hillary Clinton may soon be spending 23 hours a day on lockdown and one hour in the “yard” at the penitentiary for committing treasonous acts not long ago. Newly declassified documents released Thursday reveal a startling picture of political manipulation and intelligence misuse during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Spearheaded by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, the disclosures suggest that the CIA and FBI were not just bystanders but active participants in a Clinton campaign-driven plan to link Donald Trump to Russian interference—allegedly to distract from Hillary Clinton’s own email scandal.
At the center of the revelations is a 2020 House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) report and a declassified annex from Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation. These documents suggest the Obama administration “manufactured and politicized intelligence” to create a false Trump-Russia collusion narrative. Notably, the Clinton campaign funded the now-discredited Steele dossier, which alleged ties between Trump and the Kremlin. Despite being unverified and widely questioned within intelligence circles, the dossier was included in the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) as an annex—allegedly at the insistence of then-CIA Director John Brennan, who reportedly ignored internal warnings about its reliability.
One of the most explosive claims is that Hillary Clinton herself approved a plan on July 26, 2016, to frame Donald Trump by associating him with Russian hackers. This operation, outlined in a 2016 CIA memorandum, was allegedly designed to divert attention from her mishandling of classified emails. The plan reportedly involved coordination between Clinton’s team, DNC leadership, and outside groups like cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which would later claim that Russian hackers were responsible for breaching the DNC and DCCC.
The annex also states that Russian intelligence was aware of the Clinton campaign’s efforts. This supports claims that U.S. intelligence agencies, including the CIA and FBI, were informed but chose to pursue the Trump-Russia narrative anyway. These revelations bolster Gabbard’s accusations of a “treasonous conspiracy” involving key Obama-era figures such as Brennan, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, FBI Director James Comey, and National Security Advisor Susan Rice.
While Gabbard has referred the documents to the Justice Department and demanded criminal investigations, Durham’s four-year probe (2019–2023) did not uncover evidence of a formal criminal conspiracy. Nevertheless, his report harshly criticized the FBI’s handling of both the Steele dossier and the Crossfire Hurricane investigation into the Trump campaign.
Ultimately, the documents raise serious concerns about the politicization of U.S. intelligence agencies. The Clinton plan to smear Trump as a Russian asset was allegedly known to intelligence officials and used to manipulate public perception during a heated election. Despite the lack of new indictments, the disclosures have reignited debate over the role of intelligence agencies in domestic politics—and whether they were weaponized to influence the outcome of the 2016 election and its aftermath.
As Gabbard and others warn, these revelations may mark a dangerous precedent in which intelligence tools designed for national defense are repurposed for political warfare.
